First major U.S. airline to offer a translated Japanese-language mobile app

New Japanese-language experience includes yen currency and local point-of-sale capabilities, making it easier for customers in Japan to book and manage their travel

United offers more flights to Japan than any other U.S. airline and continues to invest in its network, fleet and customer experience

CHICAGO, October 16, 2026 – United today announced that its award-winning mobile app is now available in Japanese, becoming the first major U.S. airline to offer its app in Japanese and giving customers in Japan an easier way to manage their journey from booking through arrival. As the U.S. carrier offering the most flights to Japan, United continues to invest in making the travel experience more seamless for customers traveling between the two countries.

The Japanese-language experience brings United’s digital tools to customers in their preferred language, with support for yen and local point-of-sale capabilities. Customers can use the app throughout their journey – from searching for and booking flights to checking in, accessing their boarding pass, tracking bags, receiving real-time flight updates, navigating connections in the U.S. and managing their arrival.

“We know the digital experience is an important part of the overall travel journey, and we want to make it as easy as possible for our customers to engage with United,” said David Kinzelman, United’s Chief Customer Officer. “Japan is an important destination for United, and being the first major U.S. airline to offer our app in Japanese is another way we’re differentiating the digital customer experience and investing in making travel easier and more seamless for our customers.”

United’s mobile app was recognized as this year's best travel app by the International Business Awards and was named Best Airline App by The Business Traveler North America in 2023. It also won the People's Voice Webby Award for Best Travel App in 2021 and was a finalist for Business & Finance in 2019. More than 85% of United customers use the mobile app on the day they travel to manage their journey before, during and after their flight.

The app features include:

  • Virtual Gate provides real-time boarding progress, including which groups are boarding and how many customers have boarded.
  • Real-time bag tracking allows customers to follow the location of their checked bag throughout their journey.
  • Seat Map feature allows customers to indicate their ideal seat, and if a more preferred seat opens before departure, the app will move the customer automatically.
  • Personalized connection support makes catching connecting flights easier with personalized, turn-by-turn directions to connecting gates with estimated walk times, real-time flight status updates, tips for longer layovers, and notifications powered by United's ConnectionSaver technology – which automatically scans flights for customers who are making tight connections to determine if the connecting flight can be held without inconveniencing others.
  • Live flight updates for iPhone and Apple Watch allow customers to get live, personalized flight notifications for details such as countdown to boarding, gate number, seat, bag tracking and more right on their iPhone Lock Screen or Dynamic Island, or on their Apple Watch – all without opening the United app.
  • Automatic rebooking, when eligible, provides personalized alternative flight options following a disruption.
  • Standby waitlist allows disrupted customers to keep their confirmed itinerary and select up to three earlier flights to stand by for, and United automatically monitors those flights and sends a text when a seat becomes available.
  • Travel-Ready Center helps customers understand documentation and other requirements before traveling.
  • Airport navigation provides terminal maps and directions to help customers navigate the airport.
  • Club recommendations help customers identify United Club℠ locations at United hub airports in the U.S., based on their gate and available capacity.

The Japanese-language experience was translated by hand and reviewed by local linguists and in-country experts in Japan to help ensure the language is accurate, natural and relevant to customers. Customers whose iPhone or Android device is set to Japanese can automatically access the United mobile app in Japanese.

The Japanese language experience builds on United’s continued investment in making its digital tools more accessible to customers around the world, following the introduction of Spanish language capabilities in 2024.
